This treatise by a successful New York merchant, reformer and Mayor of New York City was written as a reply to Mill's Principles of Political Economy. Opdyke was a vigorous advocate of international free trade as well as free trade in land. The most novel features of his work are his financial proposals which included a system of inconvertible government paper money as a means of controlling the business cycle.
