Smart, engaging, immersive, compelling, immensely sad, and altogether lovely. This is the second book of The Last Policeman trilogy. It is every bit as excellent and delivers on the considerable promise of the first. Winters's command of character, pace, and language are masterful. Henry Palace is the most tenacious detective I've ever encountered. He has to be to keep plodding along - against the flow, against the best advice of his friends and compatriots, against the odds, and against the certainty of a global calamity. In this installment, Palace tracks down a missing person, a former NH State Trooper who seems to have done a runner, as have so many people already, to work on a bucket list before the last day of civilization as we know it. The case is complicated, naturally, by the inexorable approach of an asteroid about to impact Earth, but also by the quirky bits of personality that break loose from their moorings and percolate to the surface of the players involved.Again
...st the terrible backdrop of the end of days, Palace tries also to reconnect with his strange sister who seems determined to save the world through a crackpot organization of conspiracy theorists.Fantastic as all this sounds in summary, it Winters's telling it is all quite plausible, accessible, and beautifully written. Can't recommend this enough. It is a real genre transcending gem.

Writing-3Story-3Enjoyment- 2.5The second installment in the Last Policeman series proved somewhat lackluster. In the beginning Winters' voice became very dry, and resumed more of the style I remember in the previous book by about midway. I did not find myself caring much about the persons involved in the missing person story thread, because they were not that fleshed out. A significant plot hole left me feeling irritated at the story line, and really turned me off from the book. I will finish the trilogy though, because why not.
