Excerpt from the book..."You lie; you always were a liar, and you always will be a liar. Youtold my father how I spent the money.""Well, and what if I did? I had to look after myself, I suppose. Youforget that I am only here on sufferance, whilst you are the son ofthe house. It does not matter to you, but he would have turned me outof doors," whined George.

The British Government abolished Entail in 1833 so it would be very interesting to find out, perhaps later in the book, just when this story is taking place.

Why did Lady Bellamy need to be tied down to the bet..... because she was raving.......??? She was a Paralytic and would never be able to move a muscle again.

The time period of this book was after Entail was abolished but obviously unknown to the author. According to the father he could NOT remove the entail and Philip would inherit the house, lands and house contents. The estate brought a thousand a year which the father willed to Hilda, thereby depriving Philip of it. I don't know if this was legal as the thousand came from the entailed estate and the father was not allowed by law to leave any of the entailment to another. A bit convoluted.
Haggard was an expert in Agronomy which was his chief interest, so why did he write this story which was against everything he knew personally. Writer imagination and privilege are all very well, but blatant misrepresentation does not seem like Haggard, who normally was precise and perfect in his writing..
