It is true we do not possess many large running- streams which can be drawn upon during the summer months, but against this there are large areas of country where underground supplies can be tapped at moderate depths, while many localities possess suitable sites where the winter floods can be conserved by means of reservoirs or dams. Australia has been in the past the land of great estates, but where water for irrigation is available in the agricultural and horticultural districts it should become a land of small holdings. Irrigation increases the value of land, and produces remarkable financial gains, provided the work is skilfully performed and that good drainage either natural or artificial supplements it.
