A biographical work, devoted to Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné, a French aristocrat, remembered for her letter-writing., were addressed to her daughter. She corresponded with her daughter for nearly thirty, and most of her letters, celebrated for their wit and vividness, launched the author into celebrity with the publication. A keen observer and brilliant writer, she recorded important political events, religious controversies, wars and disasters, medical practices and the social and cultural life of the court of Louis XIV.
