In its centre, an ornate metal bench sat by a stone birdbath, and on the ground were several wooden crates loaded with small potted plants. ‘Eliza ran inside with all the grace of a schoolboy. ‘“What is this place?” I said in wonder. ‘“It’s a garden, I’ve been tending it. You should have seen the weeds when first I started.
