This series is such a guilty pleasure for me right now, after getting burned out on a series of heavy biographies and non-fiction. It's fun. Lots of crazy stuff happens: There are tough suffragists with clockwork jaws! Steam powered motorcycles! Alternate universe Queen Victoria is more bonkers than real-life Queen Victoria! I will say, while Ballantine and Morris engage in some cliches (why would Eliza ever love idiotic Douglas Shepard?) they don't pull the punches as far as creating cases with stakes for their characters. Believably bad stuff happens to characters that you care about. The villains have legitimately weird and unique evil plans.I did see some of the typos/sloppy copy-editing from HarperCollins in the ebook noted by other reviewers (ex: grizzly instead of grisly), but it didn't stop me from enjoying the book.

Enjoyable second to the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series. More detailed into the lives of our beloved Mr. Books and Ms. Braun. Not as
... bawdy as the first book, for which I was thankful, however not as much humor as the first one either. Still a good read and very enjoyable. Never does explain why it is called the Janus Affair. Had to go and look in the dictionary to figure out what Janus was.MoreLess
