I have just finished this story and to be honest, I hardly know where to begin reviewing! Did I like it? Yes, certainly there were parts that were interesting, without a doubt. I like a bit of historical fiction now and again! But, the ending! Reading other reviews here I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is left confused by the ending. I would love to have a few questions cleared up! But, as with massive twists that come at the very end of the book, often it's meant to be a little ambiguous, open to the reader's interpretation. So, maybe it's a 3.5 star read for me.

This is somewhat like "The Talented Mr. Ripley", with the main character (the narrator) letting us know that she has done things that are really out of character for her, since she has such a very strong sense of ethics, of which she is quite proud. But that all seems to fall apart when the other typist starts working at the 1920's police station in NY city where Rose works. Rose is fascinated wi
...th Odalie, the new girl-- she is the very picture of a beautiful, carefree, smart and beguiling flapper. But as Rose gets to know her better, the picture of Odalie changes & we see as they interact more, just how impressionable Rose can be. She becomes obsessed w/Odalie, getting sucked into her world of speakeasies, bathtub gin, crazy parties and sumptuous living. Odalie hs apparently had her own way pretty much most of the time, since anyone she meets is always taken in by her personality; Rose is jealous of this, but in trying to protect her new friend from unsavory people, gets herself into hazardous situations. There is a twist here-- you see Rose getting more & more strangely aware of her changing circumstances and unable to resist the pull of a "sinful" lifestyle. And in the end, you're not sure exactly who has done terrible things and who may have been the bystander.MoreLess

The story is intriguing. The writing style is wonderfully descriptive. Some parts were a bit slow. I wish the ending was a bit clearer to solidify what I think actually happened.
