James Beattie was an 18th century Scottish scholar and writer. Beattie was a professor of moral philosophy. His best known work The Minstrel can be found in this collection. Falconer was a sailor, which inspired his most famous poem, The Shipwreck. Falconer was serving on the frigate Aurora when it was lost at sea rounding the Cape of Good Hope.
