This book. This book. THIS BOOK! I am in awe. I loved the tenth book, which was supposed to be the last book in the series, but then John Flanagan came up with this master piece! I mean, I didn't think the ending could get any better than the tenth book, but lo and behold! This book! At the beginning I was just in awe of how everyone grew up. I was like, "What!?" Then it started getting going with Will and his apprentice for half the book and I was a bit skeptical. It's literally the first book all over again, but with different characters. Then Will and his apprentice get a mission assignment and the whole book ramps up ten levels! The ending was amazing! I was tearing up and that does not normally happen. It was an amazing end to the series. I would recommend this book to anyone.

For the most part, I was very upset with the fact Will was a grumpy, grizzled, old guy. That's supposed to be Halt. The difference is, Will is just moody and depressed whereas it's
...Halt's personality. What I mean to say is, Will became Halt; no longer the hyperactive, energetic, dorky teen AND young adult who we all came to know and love. He even greyed faster than Halt. And he has a beard. Ew.This felt like a repeat of the first book, but with a much less interesting main character. Both Maddie and Will were raised in a castle, then thrown into Ranger training where they learned the meaning of hard work and discipline. Both progress well in their training and get thrown off a Ranger horse (which never gets old, really). And at the end, their mentors run into a spot of trouble and they end up kicking serious butt to save them. Except "Ruins of Gorlan" was so much...more, I suppose.Although this might be my imagination, it also feels like there was more than one person writing the book. Some chapters just felt WRONG; the quality just wasn't there 100%. I don't know if it's because Flanagan was rushing (he is beginning to publish more than a book a year now) and the writing/editing process wasn't as thorough, or if there really WAS another hand in the book, but either way it just didn't seem to flow right.I know this probably seems cruel, but don't get me wrong, I LOVE John Flanagan's work. He is truly a masterful writer, and his characters are loveable and relatable for the most part. But every writer has his bad days, and it can be difficult to keep everything up to par all the time. This book seems to be an example of that.MoreLess
