During the forepart of this summer William and John worked at carpenter work for Benjamin Ladd, near Smithfield, and after harvest, on the recommendation of old William Wood, they got work for three months with an old English Quaker by the name of Witchel, who came from London and was settled on a farm one mile west of St. Clairsville. During that fall I and Thomas worked the farm at home, and Thomas became very expert in tracing bees and finding bee-trees, which often gave us a good stock of honey. However, in August of that year, 1809, before William and John went over to Witchel's, they started to our new farm in Belmont County, to make some improvements ready for us to move there the next spring, and they took me along to help them, and also Ben Tingly as a work-hand.
