I was hesitant to read Written in Red because I find a lot of paranormal fantasy has love and sex as the focus. While that's good for some, it tends to feel lacking for me. This book, however, focuses on incredible world building, amazing myth and creature design, and some marvelously written characters, all with a subtle love in the background, both romantic and platonic. This book ended up being such a wonderful surprise and so much fun to read. I can't wait to get my hands on the other books!

I will not be finishing this book. I've tried unsuccessfully to get to the end of this book, for two weeks now but this book is just too painful to read. This book is extremely boring, most of it is about the main character sorting mail. The main character herself is also unbearably boring. She's a weak, feeble excuse of a human being. I didn't feel like I was reading a fantasy novel but rather a book about a menial jobs. This author is all together awful. Her writi
...ng style is horrendous, her treatment and views of women in her books even more so. Her worldbuilding was non-existent.I could not get through this book, and now having read other reviews on GR, I don't feel guilty anymore for not doing so. Apparently the action in this book only happens during the last 10% of this book and I refuse to get through the crap that is the rest of this book to witness it. I'm challenging myself to read a 100 books this year and this book has put me so behind my deadline for this week. And now that I know this book continues to be awful for almost all of the book, I have committed to stop torturing myself and call it a loss. I truly don't understand why so many people like this book. I don't think I'll ever pick up another Anne Bishop novel after this. To be honestly I don't think I like urban fantasy as a genre. I'm more of a classic fantasy gal myself. To be honest I think this might have been my first urban fantasy experience. This book was truly awful and I cannot wait to start reading the next book on my list so I can completely repress this whole experience.MoreLess
