I remember when this book first came out it was considered totally scandalous. After reading it, I can see why, but it is an absolutely fascinating work on the historical Jesus versus Jesus the Christian Messiah. This is the kind of research and work more religions need and Christianity needs more of. Questioning the"authorities" not only keeps them on their toes, but requires more truthfulness from them. As you come to the end of this book there are several possible ways for the reader to react: relief, shock, regret, awe, upset, insulted, and more. I really enjoyed this book and would like to find more like it.

ieve that he is in earnest search of the historical Jesus, not the divine Christ, and that he will stick to the facts and what they can tell us, instead of speculating based on spurious evidence. But the latter is exactly what he delves into at various points, for instance where he paints an epic clash between James the Just and Paul the Apostle after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD.
